The beginning of March 2018 saw Calgary immersed in one of the heaviest snowfalls of the season. Bringing a halt to much of the city, it wouldn’t stop the friends and family of Meghan and Varun from congregating at The Lake House to celebrate their love for one another. 110 guests were invited, and 80 braved the cold to attend their special day on March 2nd, 2018. Snow fall isn’t normally a condition to factor in a typical month of March, but both Meghan and Varun agreed it added a sprinkle of magic to their cozy wedding day.
What made you choose to have a winter wedding at The Lake House?
I’ve always dreamed of a winter wedding at a secluded mountain lodge but was still open to finding something in the city. The Lake House provided the perfect location to create an elegant, intimate and romantic wedding complete with a touch of rustic mountain charm. Varun and I share a love of good food and wine and we were able to enjoy the best of both worlds at The Lake House.
Did you have a style/theme or overall vibe for your wedding day?
There was no specific theme, other than it was meant to be a cozy but elegant day with a bit of silver sparkle thrown in for fun! With the outside views looking like a winter wonderland, it added the perfect amount of charm to our special day.
Did you hire a wedding planner for the big day?
We had an amazing day coordinator to help with our event, but for all the many hours that went into planning and organizing, the in-house wedding team at Lake House was there to provide support when we needed it. We found the process of planning was made much easier with having Kristen and her team just a phone call or email away.
We hear you had an impressive dessert line up. Tell us more!
We offered our guests an array of desserts from macaroons and lemon tarts to chocolate truffles which were all made by the Lake House pastry team. The in-house pastry team also created our masterpiece of a cake complete with cascading snowflakes which turned out to be a one of the best vanilla cakes we have ever tasted.
Meghan, did you accessorize yourself and the bridal party to adapt to the colder weather?
The grey and silver bridesmaid’s dresses were stunning for the winter photos but were not complete without the grey faux fur shawl that helped them brave the -12 temperatures. I selected an off-white faux fur shawl instead of a long cape and am so glad I did as it accented the dress perfectly. The shawls really helped create the desired winter wonderland look while keeping us warm.
Varun, do you have any words of wisdom to pass onto grooms to be married this winter?
Make sure you assign one of the groomsmen to bring a pair of winter boots in order to make a path for the ladies and potentially clear a spot for the photos! Making sure you have a small flask of something to keep you warm while you wait isn’t a bad idea either.
What was the most memorable part of your wedding day?
We both agree that it would have to be our first kiss as husband and wife, in front of the gorgeous fireplace followed by a champagne toast with all our family and friends.
What was the best part about having your wedding in the winter?
It’s so romantic and intimate, the soft snow falling outside while you cozy up to the ones you love. The frosty cold mixed with the warm glow of the fire or candlelight creates an enchanting contrast that seems to make time last longer.
Would you recommend a winter wedding for other couples in Calgary?
I love the ambiance of winter weddings! I personally love the cooler colours that can be used and that you can have your wedding within the year (or 6 months for us) as venues and vendors have availability. Although unpredictable weather wise, it can create the most magical moments with the soft sparkling of the snow and the quiet beauty of winter.
