There’s no secret that February in Calgary can be one of the coldest months of the year. There’s a chance that a chinook or snowfall could adorn your special day, but the thought of either didn’t concern winter-loving couple Lauren and Brett. This stunning couple celebrated their special day on February 15th, 2018 surrounded by a fresh dusting of snow and sub-zero temperatures – a perfect backdrop for their ‘Rustic Romance’ theme, enjoyed by just over 90 guests.
How did you first learn about The Lake House Wedding Venue?
Brett and I knew we wanted a venue that had spectacular food and a rustic feel. It was important for me that we could have the ceremony and reception in one location as many of our guests would be coming from out of town. Our internet search and recommendations from friends landed us at The Lake House. As soon as Brett stepped through the door for our first meeting with Kristen he looked at me and said “Pick a date. We are picking a date before we leave here today”.
Did you have a style/theme or overall vibe for your wedding day?
If we had to describe the wedding it would probably be ‘Rustic Romance’. We wanted to highlight the winter wonderland outside, while enjoying the spectacular setting of The Lake House. With the expansive windows overlooking Lake Bonavista, we were able to stay cozy and warm, but still get the full experience of a winter wedding.
Did you hire a wedding planner for your big day?
We used both a wedding planner, and the in-house wedding team at The Lake House to make sure everything came together perfectly. The in-house team at Lake House was able to assist us with the detail work and picking a menu that everyone loved. We found Kirsten and her team to be very knowledgeable and she allowed the planning process to be very easy and stress free.
Did you use the Lake House in house pastry team? Tell us about that experience.
YES we did! Everything was spectacular. The team made a stunning one tier cake for Brett and I, as well as the dessert buffet. We had so many compliments on the delicious desserts and the selections available. They were able to accommodate the different dietary restrictions easily, not to mention it saved us the hassle of sourcing a cake vendor and transporting the cake to the venue.
What was the most unexpected thing you had to plan for on your wedding day?
I’m not sure there was anything unexpected to plan for. We knew there would/could be weather “issues” as it was winter, so we asked our guests to plan ahead with flights/drives. The events team and our wedding planner did a great job of presenting options to us for choices, and their experience allowed for a smooth and flawless day.
Lauren, did you adapt the wedding aesthetic to the winter season?
We did. We choose deeper richer colors for the bridesmaids’ dresses and I chose an ivory lace dress to reflect the time of year. Our flowers were romantic and reflected the detail of the venue. For our photos outside, the girls and I wore warm winter boots and had fur shawls to keep warm. I loved being able to add in beautiful accessories that we wouldn’t have been able to wear in warmer months.
Brett, what was your favorite part about planning your wedding?
Definitely taste testing the menu and deciding on my suit.
What was the most memorable part of your wedding day?
Brett: Our first dance. The ceremony and dinner had gone perfectly and all I was thinking about was how beautiful Lauren was and, that I sure hope I remember our dance lessons!
Lauren: The moment Brett took my hand at the top of the aisle just before we start the ceremony. But the close second is the first spoonful of soup, I was so hungry and excited for dinner!
What was the best part about having your wedding in the winter?
The best part is definitely the pictures. Warm or cold, some snow or lots (like ours) the pictures are always amazing. The winter wedding was something a little different and it gave our friends and family an excuse to get together during the winter months (saving a summer weekend without another wedding).
Would you recommend a winter wedding for other couples? Why?
Yes absolutely. The photos that were captured from our day were amazing, and I believe the feel of a winter wedding can be a more intimate setting to celebrate. Not to mention it gives friends and family something to look forward to in the colder months!
